In Steven Greenhouse's article, "Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination," he states that companies are hiring people based more on their appearance then by their qualifications. This is being considered borderline discrimination. In my opinion, it is not. I believe that companies have the right to hire whom ever they want whether it is someone that is thirty, thin, and thriving with knowledge, or someone young and unexperienced.. All businesses have a certain "image" or "look" that they want to go for, so why is it considered breaking a law to hire someone that represents that? On one hand, this act is thought about as discriminatory. On the other hand, if you are not part of the company, you would have no say in who is hired.
The specific meaning of discrimination is: the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or thing, eps on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Referring to Greenhouse's article, it didn't state that businesses were hiring on those bases. The companies were hiring based on a level of attractiveness. Some may see this as discrimination, but in reality it is not. They are not breaking any laws, so businesses' should continue to hire whoever they want.
My conclusion then, is that I agree with the companies' decision. If I were to run a store, I would hire whoever fit my personal image. Discriminatory or not, that would be my right.

In Steven Greenhouse's "Going For The Look, but Risking Discrimination," he states that "companies have been skirting the edges of anti-discrimination laws." This is a thin line for companies between discrimination and projecting an image. On one hand, a company has every right to hire who they want to represent them. On the other hand, the general public might see this as discriminating. For example, a tuxedo company would most likely hire a clean shaven, attractive, young man, not someone with piercings, tattoos, or a mohawk. To the company, this is just projecting an image, but to that tattooed reject it might seem as though they were judging and discriminating against him. So is this discrimination? Or is this just a companies' right? No, this is not discrimination, and companies have the right to hire whoever they want if it's not crossing the line of being biased against race, religion, age, or sex. "Skirting the edges of anti-discrimination" is controversial, but ultimately is the companies decision to select who they want to work for them.

"Skirting the edges of anti-discrimination laws," is like saying there is a thin line between discrimination and projecting a company's image. Companies hire people, most of the time because of the way they look, and they do not think it's discriminating. That is just the way society overlooks the world today. To some, this is the same as not hiring somebody because of race, religion, or age. That is where the problem comes in for the companies. The question rises, is hiring somebody that is able to represent the company because of their looks the same as not hiring somebody because they are not the same race as everyone in the store? This is where anti-discrimination comes into contact with companies and their hiring procedures.

It was my last year of high school and I walked into Cathedral City High School on my first day as a confident senior ready to take on the year.
Pre-calculus was my first class of the day, and I couldn't believe what I saw when I walked in. All the seats had been filled (and it wasn't a small class). I had no where to sit. Mr. Riley said I could take his chair at the teacher's desk. It turned out to not be a bad trade. Instead of sitting in one of those uncomfortable blue school chairs for an hour, I got a nice chair with a cushion.
I was still surprised though that no chairs were open.
Is this what school has come to? Where the students significantly out number the teachers? I was about to find out in the rest of my classes.

Today we learned that an anecdote is a new way to start a paragraph or essay, which is just starting off with a short story.
Parallelism is taking a couple of sentences and starting them off with the same words.
Alliteration is when the beginning of the words sound similar.

The company owner should have the choice of deciding who wants to work in their store. In most cases, the company needs to project a certain image. If the person being hired is qualified, and can do their job well, I don't see why they can't respect a dress code. Dress codes are enforced at places of work all the time, so why should this be any different. As long as the company is not racial profiling, the company should be able to do whatever they want.

Angel and I would open up a clothing store that would consist of button up shirts with ties, and dresses that go with every day apparel. People would think of our store as Ah-maze-zing! It could be one of those stores you see while strolling or driving down El Paseo.

In Hacsi's article, "Stop Waiting For A Savior," he argues that schools in the United States should be run by people that educated, dedicated to the school system, and deserving, not just somebody the public likes. I agree with this statement because the position should go to someone that is qualified and dedicated to making my school experience better.

The template for the day consisted of stating who the author was, the text, and the author's opinion about the subject. To my surprise that wasn't the easiest part of the day. We went back to second grade, and reviewed there, their, they're. Overall, it was an easy day. (:

Today in class, we had an active discussion about one of the student's essay. Since we all know how to evaluate an essay, we all participated in correcting it.

Today we talked about another student's essay, and going through that essay we learned that we should stick to the templates we have because that'll better prepare us for college writing.

Today I learned more about sticking to the main topic of the essay and going through it the whole way.
Compared to my essay, this one we worked on definitely has different elements that my essay didn't have, but there are some elements that I had in mine that the essay we worked on today didn't have. Like I had a few of my own experiences put into my essay and the one we worked on didn't, but which essay was better written probably the student example that we worked on today.

Today we learned that we all as a group, that still have a long ways to go in our writing. We got to see a college student's essay that is on the same subject of what our essays are about. The essay that we saw had great topic sentences that it could go off of, the sentences were holding hands, but what she did best was starting off with her own experiences with pets.

Angel Torres On Demand Writing Assignment 3/9/11
In this paragraph Bilger states that many Americans spend a tremendous amount of money on all kinds of care for our pets, than money being spent on welfare grants. To some Americans pets can be more than just pets they can be apart of the family, to be treated as if they were children. Theres Americans spending hundreds to thousands of dollars on surgeries for there pets. There is so many people out there that will go as far as possible just to hold onto there beloved pets just a bit longer.
I can agree with the idea of doing whatever it takes to keep your pet alive longer because you love them so much and don't want anything to happen to them, I know that feeling from my own experience. I have a little brown fur colored Chihuahua, and she has dislocated her legs so many times, and I would think after all the times that she's done it, I would learn to deal with her getting hurt a little better but that fact of the matter is I treat my dog like if she was a baby. I cant help but over react every time she gets hurt because I care for her so much.
Even though many Americans will do anything possible to help there pets where there on the brink of death, when one surgery can make a difference, but at what cost? Pets cant make there own decisions thats where there owners come in. There could be pets that have a life changing surgery and get to live longer but in the time that there alive after that surgery they could be suffering in pain. Theres a certain point where you just have to say stop. I could not be able to handle seeing my little Chihuahua in pain. So if it was time for her to go then I wouldn't let her suffer anymore and she could finally rest. If people value the life of an animal just as much or even more than another human being then. They should be able to make the choice of doing whats best for there pet and letting them rest. Our pets should be highly valued and cherished because most of the time you don't know what you had with you pet until there gone.
Bilger states that "Clearly, our love affair with our pets has gotten out of control." In some cases it is but what wouldn't you do for the ones you love.

03/7/11 :) Angel and Marisa
The main points in this article are showing how attached people get to their pets as if they were their children, and showing how far they are willing to go to keep their pets for as long as they can. Some might pay up to or more than 15,000 dollars for one surgery as a way to show their undeniable love for their pets. Some owners leave their lifelong estate or entire life saving to their animals because they are considered children.
Pathos is reflected in not only the author's writing, but also in the emotional reactions we had in class while reading this article. There is not a part where there isn't any pathos in "The Last Meow." We would always catch the emotional feeling whenever it came up while reading. The reactions in class were mixed. Some people were happy at parts because they were reminded of their loving pet, and others were sad because of a loss of a pet, or even an absence of feeling.
Logos is presented while describing doctors, the animal hospitals, and statistics from related studies. This paints a picture in our minds because we then understand what professionals these doctors are, and their facilities that they work in to care care of other people's pets. We get a sense of how qualified everyone is, and how Lady, the cat, is in good hands. Referring to the statistics, we really know now how people love their pets, and how people spend more for their pets, then for actual people on Welfare.
Pathos is much stronger in this article then the logos. This article is all about a man's struggle to keep his wife's dying cat alive, while he can barely afford to live. Shawn Leverings doesn't even have a real assurance that the cat will even live. The love for the cat takes over, and in the end Shawn knows it was the right thing to do because Lady, the cat, was like one of his own children. This was all in effort in making his wife happy, by doing that he made himself happy, and reassured himself that he made the right choice. In the end, we feel that Shawn made the right choice because of all the pathos, and how we felt while reading it.
We agree with the author because we too can relate to experiencing that love for an animal. We have always wanted to care for our animals, make sure they are always happy and love them unconditionally like they do for us. Although we love our animals, the thing we don't agree with is the cost of doing anything for them. We think Shawn is crazy for spending 15,000 dollars on a cat that might die or may live. Also, he doesn't have the money to spend anyways. While others have different opinions, and like the Leverings, they would do anything to make their animal live a little longer, Angel and I like to think it's not the biggest priority.

Today in class we learned how the words Retrospect and Borne Away should be properly used in a sentence and the way sentences need to be corrected the right way, how every little details other than just capitalizing and punctuation. We also learned how there are can be different strategies in paragraphs like one of them is having descriptive paragraphs. Which is just basically explaining in detail the subject of the paragraph. Also that you must circle, underline, highlight important points in paragraphs so you know the info that is in it. When you need the info it makes it a lot easier when looking back because you would most of the important point highlighted, underlined, circled. Also that there can be multiple attributes to a paragraph like, pathos, ethos and logos.
